How to Scrap a Car in BC: A Vancouver Guide

To scrap a car in BC you need the vehicle registration in your name, a photo ID, and a Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T) with original signatures on all four pages. Take your licence plates off before the car leaves, return them to an Autoplan broker or move them to your next vehicle, and cancel or move your Autoplan policy. Our driver brings the form and fills it in with you after you’ve been paid.

  • We bring the APV9T
  • Paid before you sign
  • Seller’s copy for your records

Your Scrap Car Paperwork Checklist

Have these ready

  • Your vehicle registration (the registration part of your ICBC papers, form APV250)
  • Photo ID that matches the name on the registration
  • The keys, if you still have them (no keys is fine)
  • A screwdriver for the plates, or ask the driver to help

We bring these

  • The Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T)
  • Payment in cash or by e-Transfer
  • The truck and gear to load the car

The Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T), Step by Step

The APV9T is the ICBC form that moves ownership from you to the buyer. It has four pages, and ICBC needs an original signature on each one, so it can’t be done with a photocopy or a typed name.

  1. Agree on the price

Our driver checks your ID and matches the VIN on the car to your registration.

  2. Get paid

    Cash or e-Transfer, your choice.

  3. Fill in the form together

The driver fills in the vehicle details and our side. You sign the seller’s section on all four pages.

  4. Keep the seller’s copy

It’s your proof that you sold the car, so file it with your records.

  5. Sign over the registration

Hand it to the driver, and the car goes on the truck.

ICBC’s own guide says to sign the transfer form after you’ve been paid, and that’s the order we always follow. The full pickup, from quote to tow, is on our how it works page.

What to Do With Your Licence Plates

In BC, licence plates belong to ICBC, not to the car, and they never go with a car you sell or scrap. Take them off before our truck leaves. Then you have two choices.

Keep them for your next vehicle

An Autoplan broker can move your plates and your policy to the new car.

Return them

If you don’t need them, drop them off at any Autoplan broker.

What not to do

Don’t hand your plates to anyone else, sell them or leave them in the car. It’s an offence to let someone use your plates on another vehicle.

Cancel or Move Your Autoplan Policy

Your ICBC policy and registration are two parts of the same document. Once the car is gone, visit an Autoplan broker to cancel the policy or move it to another vehicle, and bring the seller’s copy of your transfer form. Ask your broker whether any unused time on the policy can be refunded.

Special Situations We Help With

Lost your registration?

You can still scrap the car. Visit any Autoplan broker with your photo ID before the pickup and ask for a replacement registration. Then book your pickup and have it ready for the driver.

A family member’s car after they pass away

We’re sorry for your loss. You can scrap a loved one’s car if you have the legal authority to deal with their estate, such as being the executor named in the will or the court appointed administrator. ICBC has a separate process for this, and an Autoplan broker can tell you exactly which documents to bring. Take your time; we’re happy to wait.

A car with a loan still on it

We can only buy a car with clear ownership. If there’s a loan or lien registered against it, it needs to be paid off and released first. Your lender can tell you the payout amount and send the release.

A car that isn’t in your name

The registered owner has to sign the transfer form. If the car belongs to a partner, parent or friend, they need to be there at pickup with their ID, or have the paperwork signed in advance as ICBC allows.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Signing before you’re paid. Always get paid first, then sign.
  • Leaving the plates on. They’re yours to deal with, not the buyer’s.
  • Forgetting the seller’s copy. Keep it; it’s your proof of sale if a ticket or toll ever shows up later.
  • Not cancelling the policy. Visit an Autoplan broker once the car is gone.
  • Leaving personal items behind. Check the glovebox, trunk and under the seats, and take your garage opener and parking passes.

What our driver does at pickup

Our driver checks your ID, matches the VIN to the registration, confirms the price, pays you, fills in the APV9T with you and hands you the seller’s copy. Then the car goes on the truck. We’ll tell you on the call how long to plan for, based on where the car is parked.

BC Scrap Car Paperwork Questions

Do I need a bill of sale?

The APV9T is the form ICBC requires. If you’d like a written receipt as well, just ask the driver.

Do I need to be there?

Yes, or someone with your signed paperwork and authority. The driver needs to check ID and get original signatures.

Can I scrap a car with an expired policy?

Yes. The car doesn’t need a current Autoplan policy to be towed and scrapped. You still need the registration in your name.

What if the car has no keys?

That’s fine. Ownership is proven by the registration, not the keys. Tell us when you book so we bring the right gear.

Do I need to print the APV9T myself?

No. Our driver brings the form and fills it in with you at the pickup.

What if two people own the car?

The transfer form needs the signatures ICBC requires for the registered owners. If you’re not sure, ask an Autoplan broker before the pickup.
